A Journey of Compassion and Commitment: My Involvement with The Alzheimer's Association

Introduction:

In the summer of 2018, I embarked on a journey that would forever change the way I viewed the world and my role in it. It all started when I decided to volunteer for the Upper Ohio Valley Walk to End Alzheimer's Planning Committee, a small step that eventually led me to a much larger and more meaningful commitment. By 2020, I was honored to be asked to serve on The Alzheimer's Association, West Virginia Chapter Board of Directors. My passion for this cause is deeply rooted in both my personal experiences and my professional life.

A Personal Connection:

My journey with Alzheimer's advocacy began long before my involvement with The Alzheimer's Association. It started with my own family. My grandmother, Jean Tyler-Williams, was diagnosed with dementia in her 80s. As a teenager, I witnessed firsthand how this disease not only affects the individual but also profoundly impacts their families. My incredible Aunt Sandra Blanchard-Taylor-Freeman became my grandmother's full-time caregiver, dedicating herself to caring for both my grandmother and her mother around the clock, 24/7/365. Through their selfless commitment, I understood the emotional toll that Alzheimer's takes on caregivers and families.

A Professional Perspective:

As I grew older, my personal experiences with Alzheimer's fueled my desire to make a difference in the lives of those affected by this devastating disease. Coincidentally, my professional life brought me even closer to this cause. I began working in the healthcare field with IC Care and quickly realized that a significant portion of the patients we cared for had some form of dementia. These experiences deepened my understanding of Alzheimer's and further underscored the urgent need for research, support, and awareness.

The Unseen Epidemic:

Alzheimer's disease affects an astonishing number of individuals and families across the globe, yet it often remains in the shadows of other health concerns. While it's the sixth leading cause of death in the United States, the awareness and resources allocated to Alzheimer's are often overshadowed by more prominent health issues. This invisibility is a stark contrast to the overwhelming impact the disease has on millions of lives.

Involvement with The Alzheimer's Association:

My journey with The Alzheimer's Association has been nothing short of transformative. It has allowed me to turn my personal experiences and professional insights into meaningful action. Serving on the Upper Ohio Valley Walk to End Alzheimer's Planning Committee was just the beginning. As I became more involved, I realized the profound impact that The Alzheimer's Association has in the fight against Alzheimer's disease. Their dedication to research, support, and advocacy is truly inspiring.

Looking Ahead:

As I continue my involvement with The Alzheimer's Association and the West Virginia Chapter Board of Directors, my commitment to this cause only grows stronger. My goal is to contribute to the organization's mission in every way possible, to help raise awareness, and to support those affected by Alzheimer's. Every step we take, every dollar we raise, and every conversation we have about Alzheimer's brings us closer to finding a cure and improving the lives of those living with the disease.

Conclusion:

My journey with The Alzheimer's Association has been a deeply personal and professional one. It has allowed me to channel my passion for finding a cure and supporting families affected by Alzheimer's into tangible actions. Alzheimer's may be a silent epidemic, but our voices and actions can make it heard. I invite you to join us in our mission by participating in the Upper Ohio Valley Walk to End Alzheimer's on Sunday, September 24, 2023, at Wheeling Park. Together, we can make a difference in the fight against Alzheimer's disease.
